The Essence of a Connected and Meaningful Relationship

The Essence of a Connected and Meaningful Relationship

A love affair has to do with immediate personal satisfaction.  But marriage is an ordeal: it means yielding, time and again.  That’s why it’s a sacrament: you give up your personal simplicity to participate in a relationship.  And when you are giving, you are not giving to the other person: you are giving to the relationship. And if you realize you are in the relationship just as the other person is, then it becomes life building, a life fostering and enriching experience, not an impoverishment because you’re giving to somebody else… This is the challenge of a marriage.
Joseph Campbell

Think of some of the relationships you have had that are meaningful, loving and fulfilling to you.  Any type of relationship: romantic, family, friendship, work, stranger, etc.  You will find one thing that is absolutely in common in making those relationships work well, while you both grow more confidently as an individual as well as a couple.  Yes, it’s communication!  Communication is the guide to a harmonious and elegant dance between you and partner .

The quality of communication determines the quality of your relationship.  The quality of your relationships determines the quality of your life.

When things are going well, it tends to be a lot easier for most of us to talk about what we want, like and feel.  We are more open and honest to talk about most things, including challenging things.  We are more affectionate and relaxed.  However, the real challenge of effective communication is when we are in conflict, under stress or overwhelmed.

That being said, we become off-centered.  The most common reactions are to check-out, avoid, or blame the other person.  We get resentful when conflicts build up over time. We can yell and say hurtful things.

How you react to a highly stressful situation shows where you are at in your life emotionally, mentally and spiritually.  Being able to communicate calmly while in conflict or under stress is the mastery of life.  Everyone has the ability to cultivate that.  We’ll discuss more about this in my next sharing.

Now, you may pause for a moment and ponder…
